"Lack of employment opportunities for school leavers is a major problem confronting most Pacific countries. This paper reviews the causes and consequences and suggests some remedies. Key factors contributing to youth unemployment are over-emphasis of formal education, and limited promotion of informal employment and income generation, which are more compatible with traditional lifestyles. Most populations are still increasing and have young age structures, so there is potential for considerable expansion of the demand for
employment. Since the formal sector is able to absorb only a small part of this
demand, there is a need for a multi-facetted approach to employment, which takes traditional cultures and lifestyles into account and includes promotion of small enterprises, part-time employment and income generation as well as full-time formal employment."
