Summary: "The French Overseas territories are endowed with great geographical, biological, cultural and economic diversity but some of these assets are threatened by climate change. Indeed, the characteristics of these territories make them s pecifically sensitive to environmental factors. In these areas, certain impacts due to climate change are noticed sooner and more forcefully than elsewhere. This knowledge spurs us into action. It may well be that these territories will witness the manifestations of the new climatic realities very soon, but they may also demonstrate the types of actions that human societies can deploy in response to them. In addition to policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a climate change adaptation policy is becoming a necessity in order to anticipate the inevitable changes. The planning of this adaptation must not be treated as an isolated function: it must be completely integrated into the design of territorial sustainable development policies. This adaptation in the French Overseas territories shall be diverse and complex, due to their many specific aspects, their varied resource systems and their interconnected environments. In these territori es, the local dimension of adaptation to climate change appears to be even more apparent than in the regions of metropolitan France. The report provides a global but non-exhaustive overview of the key issues associated with adaptation to climate change in the French overseas territories. It seeks to shed light on the strengths and weaknesses of the current dynamics, identify good practices and promote the development of adaptation actions that could be implemented in the short term. For ONERC ( Observatoire national sur les effets du réchauffement climatique – French National Observatory for the Effects of Global Warming) it is consistent with the thematic (urban and health) and cross- disciplinary (methodology, strategy, costs and planning) reports published in previous years and is intended to provide specific insights into these territories that are so distant from the European continent."
