N2  - "The adoption of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by the world leaders at the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000 represents their commitment to move decisively to reduce poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality, improve human health and environmental sustainability and develop a global partnership for development by 2015. The Asia-Pacific region comprising the bulk of the world's poor, hungry and sick people presented a mixed and uneven picture in its progress toward MDG targets at the time of the last assessment. The onset of the global financial crisis and other threats to develoment such as food-fuel crises and climate change since 2007, have raised new challenges before the policy makers for achieving the Goals.  In that context, this Report takes stock of the status of achievement of MDGs in the Asia-Pacific region and identifies some of the key challenges. It then goes on to discuss the possible policy responses that may guide the region in its efforts to meet the challenges. In particlular, it emphasizes the role of social protection as well as regional and South-South cooperation for addressing some ofthe key challenges while strengthening global partnership."
