This episode of the Pacific Way features two documentaries. The first, looks at the development of the information and communication systems in Micronesia where people depended only on radio 20 years ago. Today the Pacific uses internet, telephones and mobiles. This is follewed by a story on the history of the Battle of Tarawa after World War II broke out in 1939. With the war, Pacific Island countries like Kiribati were identified as look-up points. Coast watchers arrived to monitor and report on developments of the war. This story looks at how they lived amongst the locals and to some extent made a difference in the way the war was fought. Seven thousand Japanese and American soldiers died and 700 locals lost their lives.
